My name is Debbie Cutler and I am the mother to Louise and Tom. I live in Calne, Wiltshire having moved here in 1992 from Belgium where my husband had been serving in the RAF.
My story starts in February 2015 when my son Tom who at the time was 32 years old was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer. After surgery and a course of chemo we thought the worse was over but a scan and further tests in October 2015 confirmed that the cancer had returned and it was suggested that a further course of chemo could help. Unfortunately Tom was not strong enough and in February 2016 we were told it was terminal and that he had only a few weeks left with us. As you can imagine this was not the news we wanted to hear. My world ended, the pain I felt and still feel is unbearable. But it’s nothing compared to the agony of telling his wife, Steph and looking at his 4 year old daughter, Darcy and explaining that he would be gone in a matter of weeks. Tom was amazing and very strong, the way he dealt with everything.
Tom went to Dorothy House Hospice Care in March 2016, I will say he was not happy about this, saying ‘it’s where you go to die’ but the first night there a nurse who sat with him most of the night. Tom talked through his worries with her and she reassured him and the following day when his wife and myself arrived to see him we were amazed at his mood. Over the following three weeks that Tom was there he accepted that he was not coming home and was at peace. While he was there he and his wife celebrated their 4th wedding anniversary. The staff were wonderful, they moved a bed into Tom’s room so that his wife could stay the night with him. The kitchen staff made a cake and they were treated to some aromatherapy treatments. We were all so sad but couldn’t get over the kindness and care given to us all not just Tom.
Sadly Tom passed away on Saturday 23rd April 2016 at Dorothy House Hospice, quietly with his wife, myself and his sister with him. He was 33 years old.
My daughter-in-law, Steph and granddaughter, Darcy did the ‘Bubble Rush’ in June 2016 in memory of Tom and really enjoyed the day.
This year there will be eight of our family taking part in the Bubble Rush – myself, my daughter Louise, her husband and their 3 children ages 11, 7 and 3 and of course Tom’s wife Steph and his daughter Darcy who is now 5.
We as a family can never thank Dorothy House enough for everything they did for Tom, their kindness and care was outstanding. We will continue to support Dorothy House in whatever way we can.
