Richard and Virginie’s Story

My name is Virginie Mein and I am running the Bath Half Marathon in memory of my husband, Richard Mein and in aid of Dorothy House. This is my first half marathon as I only started running in early 2017 and so far I’ve raised £1,500 excluding gift aid.

Richard, died on the 16th January 2016 of pancreatic cancer at the age of 52. He was diagnosed at the end of August 2015 and died in just over four months. He had three months of chemotherapy at the Bath clinic but when he was diagnosed he had a secondary cancer in his liver.

Dorothy House provided Richard with a Nurse Specialist who expertly advised him on his care at home and then arranged for him to be looked after in the hospice for the last ten days of his life. The hospice staff were just amazing and they allowed Richard to die in privacy and dignity as he wished.  My daughter was only three and a half years old and my son just over five years old when Richard passed away. My son is severely disabled and attends Three Ways school in Bath. Dorothy House were there for all of us and their support was just fantastic and still continues to be now a year after Richard died.

For most of our time together, Richard and I lived in Bathampton village but now the family has moved to Lansdown in Bath to a property which Richard and I planned and designed together to fit the needs of our children.

My husband was an entrepreneur and a truly exceptional man who leaves behind him a gap that’s impossible to describe in words for his family, friends and staff.
