Prepare your wardrobe for the Autumn weather

Autumn fashion hints and tips from Marianne Wise Dorothy House Hospice Care Shop Manager

If spring and summer clothing were watercolour light, then autumn/winter style this year is a rich oil painting. Layers of tactile, jewel-like colours and patterns add depth, while baroque embellishment and metallic threads create texture and reflection. This eclectic but timeless combination blends together effortlessly to give warmth and excitement to clothing that is nostalgic and comforting, glamorous but cosy. Beautifully different, incredibly wearable and seriously fun!

So why are this season’s fashions so inspiring to us clothes obsessives at Dorothy House? It must be that the one thing we can do really well in this unpredictable kingdom is to layer and prepare for contrary weather with aplomb and style.

Whether you shrug on suede, shimmy on cashmere, or throw on tweed to complete your look, you can add to the pleasure knowing that you found your treasure in a local DHHC charity shop.

Is there anything more exciting than flicking through a rail of pre-loved clothing to find that special, covetable item, at a fraction of the original price? Now imagine a shop where every item has been chosen with the adventurous and discerning in mind. Our shop on Bridge Street Bath (see page 24), is a treasure trove of unique and vintage donated pieces that will work those autumn/winter trends perfectly for you.

The Bridge Street boutique team has plundered 700sq miles of fantastic donations to bring you luxurious knits, satin and silk shirts, tweed, wool and fine leather. We are proud to specialise in clothes that you want to take home and keep forever – unique clothes that give pleasure to the sartorially savvy while helping us to fund our important Hospice work.

Whether you choose to channel Gucci and wear Catherine Medici/ 70s sport style by mixing velvets and satin with Adidas stripes, or prefer a more subtly sophisticated look with Chloé-style ruffles layered with a biker jacket, you are sure to find something here.

Looking for a casual outfit with a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ for Sunday lunch with friends? Look no further. We have perfect suede jackets and softly tailored blouses to combine with gently distressed denim. If you’re planning to walk off that pudding with a stroll in the countryside, rummage through our boots and shoes, to find Italian made leather hikers and Spanish knee high boots.

Autumn and winter brings the opportunity for escapism and glamour, shorter days replaced by longer nights, parties and events providing the sparkle as the sun fades earlier every day.  If you’re not ready to go the whole glittery hog but want to add interest to your evening ensemble, why not reference the renaissance with a velvety soft embroidered evening bag, or Studio 54 with a metallic clutch?

We always have accessories to make you smile and dancing shoes that bring joy to special occasions. It makes perfect sense to trip the light fantastic in beautiful dresses, suits and shoes, that are light on your purse. Dress with us and make fabulous memories for the future, while supporting your local hospice.
