The course is designed to give an overview for Healthcare Professionals who care for people who are given syringe drivers for symptom management.

It will contain the following:

  • Be confident in knowing when to use a syringe drive
  • Be familiar with drugs commonly used via the subcutaneous route and their compatibility
  • Be confident in managing syringe driver related problems and where to seek help and support if needed
  • To understand the rationale for using certain drugs to manage symptoms
Course delivery

This session will be delivered by Janet Bilton

As one of our advanced nurse practitioners, Janet is clinically based within the inpatient unit. She is passionate about nurse led education and in providing the holistic care and treatments that address unwanted symptoms that many patients have as they approach the end of their lives. Her main interest within education is symptom control and ACP discussions.

For any Healthcare Professionals who care for people or who are looking after people who are receiving medication via a syringe driver.

Course details

This three hour course is for any Healthcare Professionals who would like to have more knowledge around the use of syringe drivers, why and when they are used and how, with a focus on medication and complexities of using different preparations.

Course content

The course includes information giving, and a practical element of working with syringe drivers

The following aspects will be covered:

  • To gain an understanding of the indications for use of syringe drivers
  • To increase knowledge of the medications used in syringe drivers
  • To understand drug compatibilities and be able to identify potential problems
  • Symptom management and patient studies are discussed
