Course Delivery
This session will be delivered by Dave Smith
Dave is the Spiritual Lead here at Dorothy House and offers multi faith/no professed faith support to patients, families, volunteers and staff. He works collaboratively with a team of volunteers and provides this service on site at Winsley and within our wider community area. Dave’s intention is to respond to our diverse community by offering bespoke support to those in need. He is also passionate about sharing his experience with others, so we can all learn together and respond better to the needs of our patients and families.

Course details
This three hour virtual course will provide attendees with an overview of the potential issues in offering spiritual support to individuals and their families and loved ones whilst living with a palliative diagnosis. To explore how to offer spiritual support to those who are grieving.
The training aims to:
- Explore what spirituality means to different people.
- Provide advice and training materials for end of life spiritual support work with patients and their families and loved ones.
- Share experiences of providing spiritual support in different ways within the diverse community.
It is not aligned to one particular faith group but rather explores spirituality in its broader sense: exploring faith, no faith and diverse spirituality.
Course content
The course includes information giving, and patient studies which participants will be invited to discuss and engage in debate with regards to effective spiritual support:
- What is spiritual distress?
- What is spiritual distress?
- Causes of spiritual distress
Difficult conversations and questions and how to respond
