50 years of care appeal
This year, Dorothy House turns 50. For half a century, our community has stood with us so that we can walk alongside patients and families. In those 50 years, we’ve directly cared for over 75,000 people. With your help, we can ensure we care for thousands more for another 50 years.
To mark our 50th anniversary, we’re asking a simple question:

The need for Dorothy House’s care is rising, but so too are the costs. Government funding remains at 20%, costs are increasing, and our ageing population faces more complex care needs than ever. Our nurses are out in the community and on our Inpatient Unit, day and night, ensuring comfort, safety, and compassion, exactly when it’s needed most; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Our nurses need your help
Our care is powered by an extraordinary circle of nurses, health care assistants, doctors, therapists, counsellors, housekeeping, kitchen staff, drivers, retail teams, volunteers, admin teams, fundraising teams, and every supporter who has ever given time, voice, or a financial gift. At the centre of this circle of care are our nurses.The steady, skilled presence at the bedside, the calm at 3 a.m., the hand that holds, the pain that’s managed, the dignity that’s protected. “For 23 years, I was a Dorothy House nurse. Having had cancer twice, I felt I had something to offer others who were going through some of the scariest and darkest moments of their lives. The most rewarding part of being a nurse at Dorothy house has been the patients, being there to listen to people. Being allowed to treat people as individuals, not numbers in bedrooms. I always knew how important this work was, but I never imagined I would one day need this care myself.”
