Staff spotlight – Chris Harlow, Business Intelligence Manager

In our latest Dorothy House staff spotlight, we caught up with Chris Harlow, Business Intelligence Manager, to find out more about his role supporting the Hospice.

“I joined Dorothy House in summer 2023 to tackle all things data. Coming from a big acute trust in Bristol, it was quite the change of scene! There was a lot to get my teeth into, starting with automating our data processing. This was a game-changer for our little data team – instead of spending our time pulling data manually out of different systems, we now have it all waiting ready for us each morning.

Building on that, we have created live dashboards for our colleagues, giving them up to date info about how their work is going every day and covering our clinical teams, fundraising and HR. Looking more directly at patient care, we also developed our OACC reporting, helping us understand the impact of our care on patients’ end of life journeys by analysing data about the symptoms and concerns they experience.

This also inspired the live patient impact dashboard, which allows clinicians to see all of a patient’s wellbeing scores in one place at the touch of a button. These are a few ways we (in Data & Digital) are trying to help us all work smarter instead of harder.

A standard day for me would be working improving some of our analytics, producing reports or responding to queries, and meeting with colleagues from around the organisation to plan out how we can make ever more use of our data. It’s great having a role that touches lots of different departments. Recently, I’ve been learning about our network of charity shops and how so many staff and volunteers are out there in the community, raising awareness and funds to support our work. This is our next area for getting more out of our data!

I love working at Dorothy House for so many reasons, but I guess it’s having so many genuinely lovely colleagues that really makes it great. The beautiful setting doesn’t hurt either!”
