BBC Radio 4 Hospice UK Appeal
On Sunday, 3 August, Hospice UK was featured on the BBC Radio 4 Appeal with a patient story from Dorothy House.
The broadcast offered a unique opportunity to share the vital importance of hospice care with listeners across the UK.
Dorothy House on Radio 4 Appeal
Presented by Jo Brand, she tells the powerful story of Sam, Rob, their five children, and the support they received from Dorothy House. Sam, Rob and their five children were the vision of a happy, contented family life. After having their first child together in 2016, a trip to the doctors to investigate a relatively unsuspicious sore ankle left Rob with a terminal diagnosis of motor neurone disease, which Sam called ‘our worst nightmare’, turning their world upside down.
The next two years were an incredibly tough journey for Rob, Sam and their family. Dorothy House became their lifeline, offering expert care and the space to create cherished memories. As Rob’s condition worsened, the Hospice made sure he had dignity and comfort right until the end of his life.
Sam says: “Hearing Jo share Rob’s story with all the BBC Radio 4 listeners was an absolute dream. Rob always wanted his story and his love for his family to live on as legacy. The support we received from our local hospice was wonderful, and supporting Hospice UK’s appeal feels like we are doing our bit to support hospices across the country, so they can be there for more families like ours.”
