Volunteers Week 2023 – Why I volunteer

This year, Volunteers’ Week falls between 1 – 7 June. The week is an annual celebration of the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering in their communities.

At Dorothy House, we couldn’t do what we do without the amazing work of our volunteers across the organisation; from our retail shops, to our compassionate companions, to those helping at the Hospice in Winsley as gardeners and in administration.

Why do our volunteers give us their time?

Our volunteers are vital to Dorothy House, but why do people choose to give us their time? Who better to tell you than our volunteers…

Julie, who helps out at the Argyle Street shop in Bath said:

“I like meeting the customers, meeting other volunteers. We have fun! It’s all been a real laugh… you’re bound to like it.”

Chris at Chippenham Furniture also said:

“I recently retired and decided to spend part of my time helping Dorothy House, a very worthwhile charity. I really enjoy my role testing the safety and function of donated electrical items. It gives some structure to my life. I found before I began volunteering that I had little to do and lots of time to do it! It also gives me a sense of achievement.”

Sue in our Frome shop told us:

“I really enjoy coming in and making a difference, I know a lot of the customers by name and I miss them when I’m not in.”

Why I volunteer for Dorothy House - Rebecca

For some there is also a personal connection. Rebecca, also at Chippenham Furniture, began volunteering after her husband died, having been cared for by Dorothy House.

Many of our volunteers find it a great way to move into paid employment, often with Dorothy House. Tony Smith began volunteering at our Warminster shop in November 2021 and recently applied successfully for the role of Sunday Deputy. Tony says:

“Volunteering has been a great way to meet new  people and give back to the local community.”

Martin volunteered at our Bath Furniture Shop for two years, previously managing his own delicatessen and café, and has now become Mobile Manager of the shop.

Why give Dorothy House your time?

There are many different reasons why people may want to volunteer. It’s a great way to make a difference in your local community, gain valuable experience and make friends. At Dorothy House we do everything we can to make the experience as rewarding as possible:

  • Full training provided
  • Regular supervision
  • Flexible hours
  • Out of pocket expenses paid

We have more than 25 roles which support across our Clinical, Retail and Fundraising teams. Whether it’s providing a listening ear within our Bereavement team, helping to keep our shops running, supporting our patients, or assisting with administrative duties, there are so many opportunities to get involved with Dorothy House.

If you’re unable to volunteer your time to Dorothy House but would still like to contribute, we would be very grateful for any donations made.
