Matthew’s story

“My name is Matthew, I am 40 years old. When I was diagnosed with a brain tumour, I thought I had only two choices: suffer through my illness, or give up. Then I found a third way—a Dorothy House way.

Dorothy House has given me back my independence, dignity, and hope. They helped me manage pain, they support my wife, and are making sure my children will be cared for when I’m gone. Because of them, I’ve lived far beyond my prognosis—and, more importantly, I’ve lived those months as myself, not just as a patient.

This care is only possible because of donations. Without your support, families like mine would face illness and loss without the compassion and expertise they deserve.”

“Please give to the Life Lines Appeal today. Your donation will provide comfort, dignity, and vital care when people need it most.”

It costs £52,000 a day to keep services free, with only 20% funded by government. Your donations ensure families like Matthew’s receive the dignity, comfort, and compassion they deserve.

The depth and breadth of Dorothy House

Dorothy House is a lifeline for families facing life‑limiting illness, providing expert care at home, in the community, and on our Inpatient Unit. More than 90% of services are delivered outside the Hospice, helping people live well for as long as possible.

For Matthew and his family, this means specialist nursing, counselling, and creative therapies that ease pain, offer emotional strength, and create lasting memories. Practical support ensures they can focus on each other, not on uncertainty.

Here are a few videos from Matthew talking about the different services he has experienced. Without your kind donation, we cannot continue to offer this vital care to those facing death in our communities.
