Palliative Care Champions – Because every chapter of life matters.
Palliative Care Champions aims to build relationships with our local community care homes to improve confidence and competence in the provision of palliative care in Assisted living & social care communities, Residential & nursing care homes settings.
We are providing education and development that will build confidence and competence in Palliative and End of Life care. Our Palliative Care Champions gather three times a year, with each session dedicated to a specific focus area. Topics are chosen dynamically throughout the year, often reflecting the group’s evolving needs and priorities. Previous sessions have covered: Nutrition, Nausea and vomiting, the last 48hours, spirituality and hand massage.
Up-coming sessions 10am – 2pm:
- Day 1 – 23rd Feb – Pain Control & Terminal Agitation
- Day 2 – 26th June – Skin changes & Tissue Viability
- Day 3 – 6th Nov – TBC
The cost to join this program is £95 – which covers 2 members* of staff per organisation to attend all three sessions over a 12 month period.
*This does not have to be the same attendee for each session.
Course delivery
This session will be delivered by Helena King and Megan McGee, alongside other guest speakers.
Helena King has been working at Dorothy House for over 20 years and has worked in both the In Patient and the Community settings. Helena is currently a Clinical Lead for one of our Community Palliative Care Teams and is a wealth of knowledge in relation to Specialist Palliative Care Nursing. She has a real passion for creating a collaborative relationship between the hospice and local care homes across our community to help equip and empower their staff in the provision of quality palliative and end of life care.
Megan McGee is a registered nurse within Dorothy House Inpatient unit who has recently joined education as one of our Education & Professional development leads. Having worked across clinical, research and educational settings, Megan has had a well-rounded scope of practice that has helped to deepen her desire to de-stigmatize death through the provision of palliative and end of life care education, not only for the nursing workforce but also our general community. Her diverse background has taught her the immense importance of relationship and equality in humanity despite, and in respect of our differences which has inspired her longing to improve not only the lives but the deaths of others.
Who should attend?
Open and inclusive to all staff working in:
- Assisted living & social care communities
- Residential & nursing care homes
- and can be Registered or Non-Registered.
Note: Some sessions may be more clinical than others and so the manager of the home will allocate who from their team will attend each session.
Course Details
Training will be given by:
- A mix of CPCT leads & specialist nurses & Education leads.
- Face to face teaching
- Interactive and tailored to the members needs that expressed through feedback.
