Losing dad to prostate cancer – Andy’s story

'51 years have never felt like such a short time' - Andy reflects on his dad's diagnosis with advanced prostate cancer in early 2020 and the impact this had on him and his family. Whilst they experienced a turbulent couple of years, Andy expresses his gratitude for the support of Dorothy House Hospice Care during this time.

After the passing of his dad in 2022, Andy shared: ‘I am exceptionally grateful for everything Dorothy House Hospice Care did for my family. The care feels very human and very personal and I’m very grateful to everyone that helped our family through such a difficult time.’

Andy and his family - support for prostate cancer

Andy explains how his dad's caring and giving personality was mirrored in the care and support from Dorothy House. He specifically highlights how this personal level of care remained a constant both during his father’s final days, and after his passing.

He emphasises the value of the support his family had in coming to terms with Steve's prostate cancer diagnosis, but also with losing him, and how this was instrumental in their journey as a family.

Not only was the Dorothy House In Patient Unit at Winsley a physical place of respite for Steve during his final days of life, but also a crucial support hub and place of peace for Andy and his family.

‘I know dad would have wanted me to thank you all. It made a huge difference in helping us accept some realities at a most difficult time and the support provided by the team at Dorothy House Hospice Care to make difficult decisions, when we could have all easily felt overwhelmed by things’
