From the opening of our new shops to our exciting new Threads for Care collaboration with local makers as part of this year’s Sustainable September campaign, it’s been a busy few months for Dorothy House Retail! On top of this, we’re excited to announce the launch of our brand-new House Clearance service, which will be available in Chippenham, Melksham, Corsham and Devizes from Monday 6 October 2025.

Whether you’re navigating the difficult task of sorting a loved one’s possessions or simply downsizing your home, our new house clearance service aims to make the process easier and as stress free as possible. We know that every situation is unique, which is why we tailor our service to suit your needs. We’ll help you handle the process with care, allowing you to focus on what matters most.

We offer a full service, tailored to suit the needs of each customer and their property. This includes:

  • Clearing of all items within a property
  • White goods and rubbish removal
  • Garage, sheds and outbuildings clearances

Items from house clearances will be sorted and sold through our high-street furniture and clothing shops, as well as our eBay store front, helping to generate vital income for the Hospice. Any items that cannot be sold will be responsibly recycled and disposed of.

How does Dorothy House Clearances work?

You can enquire about a House Clearance by completing the form on this page, or by calling us on 01225 255224. Once we’ve received your enquiry, a member of our team will get in touch with you to find about more about the service you require. We will then meet you at the property to make an initial assessment. Afterwards, we will email you with a quotation for the clearance and discuss our next available date.

If you only have a few items to clear, we offer a free furniture collection service. Simply complete our online form and a member of our team will be in touch to arrange a booking.

On the day of the house clearance, you don’t need to be at the property – our team can work in a way that is most convenient for you. We can collect the keys for the property via a key safe, neighbour or estate agent.

While we are currently offering the service in Chippenham, Melksham, Corsham and Devizes, if you live outside of these areas, we may be able to travel further to accommodate you. Please do get in touch to discuss your requirements.

How much does the average House Clearance cost?

No two clearances are the same. Every property is different, as are the circumstances. Therefore, the cost of a house clearance can vary, with the average price being between £500 and £850, subject to the service and level of clearance required. We’ll take the time to understand your needs and provide a fair, transparent quote that will be based on the following:

  • The size of the clearance (and any additional services required)
  • How much resource we will require for the clearance (e.g. number of staff, vehicles and time)
  • The location and access to the property
  • What items from the clearance can be sold in our shops
  • How many items will need to be recycled and disposed of

Why isn’t the House Clearance service free?

Each clearance involves more than just removing items. Our fees reflect the care, time and resources involved in delivering a reliable and efficient service from start to finish. As Dorothy House Hospice Care is a charity, the fee we charge covers our cost to complete the service, as well as supporting patients and families in our care.

Handled with care, for end of life care – Why you should choose Dorothy House as your clearance provider

Supporting families with care and respect is at the heart of our house clearance service. As a charity that is led by compassionate care, we understand the emotional and practical challenges that come with clearing a home, especially after the loss of a loved one. Our dedicated and experienced house clearance team are all employed by Dorothy House Hospice Care and will approach every clearance sensitively and professionally. We understand that every item holds a memory, and every home tells a story.

As your local hospice, we work to ensure that everyone with a life-limiting illness across Bath and North-East Somerset, and parts of Wiltshire and Somerset has access to personalised end of life care. To do this, we must raise over £19 million each year. Without your generous donations and support our care and services would not be possible. Last year, we cared for 4,254 patients and their loved ones. By using Dorothy House as your clearance provider, the clearance fee and profits made from the donation of your items will support this to deliver this much-needed care, ensuring that no one faces death alone.
