Dedicate a light in memory of a loved one

Our Firefly Woods contain a beautiful constellation of individually handmade ‘Fireflies’, kindly gifted by world-renowned artist Bruce Munro. A unique large-scale light installation nestled throughout the woods here in the grounds of the Hospice in Winsley. Each Firefly is made up of tiny separate lights, which glow together, leaving a huge impact.

Each light can be dedicated to the life of someone special and will shine brightly in their memory. Your light will be allocated to you for a full year. If you wish, you can choose to renew your dedication once the year comes to an end.

How your dedication will help to fund end of life care in our community

Could fund

a full hour of care on or Inpatient Unit for a patient receiving essential care, symptom control and pain relief.

Could fund

an expert counsellor to run a support group session for young adults with a life limiting illness, helping them feel less alone.

Could fund

4 hours of care, delivered at a patient’s home, during the night, by a compassionate, skilled and experienced Hospice at Home carer.

Renewing your Firefly light

If you have previously dedicated a light, we hope this was a source of comfort and solace for you, as and when you needed it. We know that for some, just knowing their light is here, nestled amongst 19,800 other beautiful lights is a source of comfort.

If you would like to renew your Firefly light, please click the ‘dedicate a light’ button below and this will take you through the steps of renewing your existing dedication.

Please note, our supporter care team will also be in touch for anyone who’s dedication is coming up to the one year mark.

Thank you for being part of our Firefly community, and thank you for your kindness and support; it is  a wonderful way to leave a lasting legacy in the name of a loved one.

What our Firefly Woods mean to you

Vicky's story

“My dad spent six days in the hospice. I was with him when he died. We were privileged, because it was such a peaceful, serene, setting. I loved walking through the Firefly Woods in Winsley, seeing the Firefly lights. Just the sense of calm it would bring. I can’t stress enough how in those moments, there is no calm inside you. It’s pure panic, worry, sadness, fear. But it’s such a beautiful place. I was adamant that my dad, Danny, had to have a Firefly light.”

Jo's story

“I think the giving back is the thing that helps us go forward. For me it keeps his name alive. I can use his name freely, I can talk about him. I don’t ever want his name to not be mentioned. I also want his memory to be honoured.”

Sue's story

“She was such a big part of me. And I miss her every second of every minute of every hour of every day. And I just feel that the Firefly Woods is where she is.”

Sue now has a wonderful team of volunteers who have been working tirelessly to keep the woods an accessible and inviting space for everyone to enjoy. We now have clear pathways through our woods and plants and trees to attract more wildlife, as well as spaces to sit and enjoy the peace and tranquillity.

Celebration of Life Events

Each year we host two Celebration of Life Events in the grounds of Winsley House in September. We would be delighted if you are able to join us. There will be time to visit your Firefly light, to reflect and celebrate the life of your loved one. As we get closer to the event times, we will have links to secure your ticket here in this section of the webpage. For those that dedicate a light, you will receive information directly about the next events from our fundraising team.

Bereavement support

Within our Family Support Team, we care for children and their families to help support them through the grief of losing a loved one. Losing a loved one can turn your world upside down and the emotional pain can feel overwhelming.

When you dedicate a Firefly light in memory of someone special, your donation will help support our services, ensuring that we can continue to be there for patients and their families in our community who are facing end of life.
