Firefly Appeal 2024
Dedicating a light on a Firefly is not only a celebration of the life of a loved one, but your donation also means that Dorothy House can continue to be there for patients and their families, now and into the future.
We're here, for as long as you need
We provide palliative and end of life care to adults (18+) with a progressive, treatable but not curable life-limiting illness or with severe frailty, and also their family (including children) and carers.
We care for people across our 700sq mile catchment area which covers Bath & North East Somerset (BaNES), and parts of Wiltshire and Somerset. Our services provide physical, psychological and/or spiritual support, and are free of charge. We’re available day and night to ensure that you have the right care, at the right time.
When someone is ill, it’s not just the patient who is affected. Life can be turned upside down for the family and for friends and carers. That’s why we’re here for you, for as long as you need.
Donate now
Your donation will help us care for even more patients and their families when they need it the most. Not only will it support people at the Hospice at Winsley House, but it also supports your community and those that wish to be cared for at home. Thank you.
How you can support us
Discover our Interactive Nature Trail
The Dorothy House Interactive Nature Trail is the next step in our ambition to open up the site to anyone wishing to find a wellbeing space to reflect in nature, or to find serenity in grief.
Families can get stuck into our augmented reality app, discover the extraordinary habitats of our resident creatures, and learn more about the natural cycles of life and death.
Royal Marines Band says one final goodbye to Dorothy House patient
On Tuesday 18 June, Dorothy House Hospice Care played host to the Royal Marines Band Collingwood, who performed for patients, staff and volunteers, but most importantly, to two of their band members, Musician Sophie Ward and her husband, Lance Corporal Richard Ward. Newlyweds Sophie and Richard were part of the Royal Marines Band, based at HMS Collingwood. Sophie, aged 27, played flute and saxophone in the band before she was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in January. Thanks to Richard, the band made the journey to Winsley, where Sophie had been staying on our Inpatient Unit (IPU).
Join our Monthly Givers
Help us to ensure that nobody in our community has to face death alone with a regular monthly donation to the Hospice.
As a Monthly Giver to Dorothy House, you will be joining our amazing group of supporters who believe in our care, and want to help make sure that we can continue to reach more people, now and into the future.
The care that your money could help provide is invaluable. Our patients only get one chance to have a good death, and the memory of how a loved one dies remains with their family forever.
Hospice care and virtual reality
Dorothy House is proud to be a part of the Immersive Technology in Healthcare Team – a Virtual Reality (VR) project, funded by the Masonic Charitable Foundation via Hospice UK and their ‘Re-imagining Day Patient Services’ funding programme. The project trials the use of virtual reality to help reduce symptoms and improve relaxation in patients.
Using 360°cameras, the project team has been creating immersive videos that virtually transport patients outdoors.

The Dorothy House Podcast
In this episode, Fin's mum Sandie and BA (Hons) Photography Course Leader, Stephen Vaughan, share their painful but deeply inspirational story about Fin, who died on 25 March 2022, aged 31, following the diagnosis of a brain tumour in 2018. On Friday 20 October, Bath Spa University launched an exhibition and 100-page publication of work by Fin, titled ‘With This Breath’. This formed part of his legacy, something that concerned him before his death, and a project which has been fully realised. “It was an incredibly courageous and beautiful piece of work that was unflinchingly honest and deeply moving,“ says Stephen.
